Solar thermal panels, similarly to Solar PV panels, provide energy when exposed to sunlight. However thermal panels convert this energy into heat to provide hot water for your taps and showers.
Generally solar thermal panels are fitted to a roof, although they can be fitted in most outside spaces and then connected to your hot water cylinder, or to a newly fitted hot water cylinder. When the sun shines, water is heated up in the panel, which is pumped round a circuit of pipes. Hot water from the panel is then transferred to the water cylinder. Sometimes depending on the strength of the sun at the time, this is enough on its own to get the hot water up to usable temperature – at other times you will still need your central heating or a boost from an electric immersion heater to get the water fully hot. Even if this is the case the panels will still have massively reduced the energy required to get your water up to temperature.
